Let me take you back for a moment. My father sold insurance for a living. Growing up in a large Italian family in Chicago, you could find us often gathered around the [extended] dinner table talking into the night with aunts, uncles and cousins.
It was common in those days to pitch your services to friends and family. But through all of our large family gatherings, not once did I hear my father talk about insurance.
Yet he had every family member insured.
My father didn’t fit the stereotypical salesman mold - he sold with integrity and respect. He knew the value of what he was offering, and communicated that value to his clients through honest conversation and genuine connection and care. And his clients trusted him, not just because of the value he was offering, but because they trusted his character.
So much so, that by the time he retired, he had the children and grandchildren of his first clients insured.
Though I didn’t know it at the time, he taught me the most valuable lesson of my career: authentic relationships trump slimy pitches, all day, every day. We’ve blended that ideology into everything we teach and embody here.

The truth? I didn't fit the sales mold. So I built my own.
That experience changed everything.
I desperately wanted to leave finance and move into sales. My boss told me it wasn’t possible - that I’d never make the kind of money I was aiming for (which was 50% more than my finance salary). I trusted myself anyway and jumped into a software sales role. What I didn’t expect was how brutal that first stretch would be.
I also know what it’s like to be told no when you’re growing up in a boys’ club.
Minutes before my first sales meeting, I had a full-blown panic attack outside the conference room.
I pulled myself together, walked in with my manager… and completely bombed.
Afterward, my manager told me - no joke - that I should never wear pants to a meeting again. I should wear a skirt. That was the culture. That was sales.
Unsurprisingly, I failed at that job. I was embarrassed. Ashamed. And for a moment, I wondered if my boss had been right after all. But I wasn’t willing to go back to a desk job and ignore what I knew deep down - that I was made for more…much more.
I found another sales role - this time with a supportive manager who didn’t care what I wore. And something clicked. I didn’t just earn a little more than I had in finance - I tripled my sales in under a year.
After searching for years, I discovered vision boarding. Six months later, I met Tim. And he was everything on my vision board.
I met my person over a decade ago, thinking I’d never meet “the one”.
Growing up in an Italian family taught me two things: we live to eat, and dessert is a food group.
Today, I live in Phoenix with the love of my life, Tim, and our pup, Jessie. If you ever find yourself in the Valley, give me a call - let’s break bread together.
I was raised in the Windy City, but in 2018, we traded skyscrapers for sunshine.
I got my start coaching service providers when a photographer asked me to speak with her group of friends about sales.
I’m a dog mom and work hard so that she can have a better life!
I love to travel. Whether it’s touring Italy, Laguna Beach, or a trip home to Chicago, you can find me making the most of space in my business!
But… I also need time to recharge. I’m an introvert and find energy in quiet moments and intimate gatherings.

Meet Joan Cinquegrani
Joan is not only an IS member, but was Maria's wedding planner. After mastering our methods in her own business, Joan became an IS coach!
Joan Cinquegrani (she/her/hers) grew up with “Type A” tendencies. She planned her family vacations starting from age 13, she color-coordinated her closet (despite her mother’s eye rolls), and she continues to be the one to organize get-togethers for friends and family. Her background in non-profit events gives Joan a unique perspective on event execution and design within a budget. Her eye for detail ensures nothing falls through the cracks. Five Grain Events (derived from Joan’s married last name… in Italian, cinque = five and grani = grains) is determined to deliver the event you’ve always imagined, without the stress of wondering who is going to handle it all!
